Born Luis Gustavo (Gus) Nevarez, born in Santiago Papasquiaro Durango, Mexico. At age 8, Gus immigrated with his family to San Mateo, CA. Gus attended San Mateo High School and College of San Mateo, became a US citizen before enlisting in the United States Navy for Vietnam. Gus served in the River Patrol Brown Water Navy Miner Division 112, as part of his service he disables mines. Upon completing his tour and returning home. Gus attended University of California school of dentistry in San Francisco, CA Gus married first wife, Maureen. Together, they welcomed two sons, James and Thomas. Moving to Visalia, CA in 1974 Gus began working at the San Joaquin Health Clinic in Orange Cove, CA. Gus later went on to start his own dental practice, in Visalia, CA. In 2010 decided to sell his practice. In 2016, Gus married Elizabeth Hernandez and went to work as a dentist for the California Department of Corrections in Corcoran. After 8 years, he semi-retired as he went on to work for the Tule River Reservation Dental Clinic. Gus loved spending time with his family. He loved family get-togethers. He enjoyed being active with his grandchildren creating memories like roller blading, bike rides and motocross. Gus also believed in community, connected with others. Gus is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hernandez, his son James and wife Sandy Nevarez children Cassandra, Monica, William, Maximaillian, son Thomas and wife Kim Nevarez, children Madison Hester, Brandon, Xander, and his great-granddaughter, Bristol Hester. He is also survived by his sisters Olivia, Lillia, Chela, and Rose, his brother Rudy, and numerous extended families. Gus is preceded in death by his parents, Max and Socorro Nevarez, his brothers Max and Beto, and his sister Martha. A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 4-7pm with a rosary prayed at 6pm at Hadley Marcom Funeral Chapel, Visalia, CA. Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 8am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Visalia, CA followed by inurnment at Visalia District Cemetery. A celebration of life will be on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2pm at Neighborhood Church.
